Free Legal Music Downloads

Have you discovered Noisetrade yet?  It's a great site for discovering new artists and new music.  There are thousands of albums available from artists who would love to meet you, and love for you to give them a listen.  And all of the content is FREE.

When you find something that sounds interesting - you can listen to the music on the page and get some information about the artist - just enter your email address, country, and postal code, and they'll email you a link to download the music.  That's all you have to do.  Then simply unzip the file you download and enjoy your new music.  If you enjoy it, consider leaving a tip to support the artist and spreading the word through twitter and/or facebook.

You can even embed some music on your website or blog to share with your friends.

I've downloaded several albums, but I don't really listen to music that much, so I haven't even listened all the way through some of them.  Unfortunately the option to listen to or sample the music before downloading has stopped working in my browser, probably some plug-in that needs updated.  So, I've downloaded some based on the embedded video on the page.  Thankfully that still works, and if I like the sound of the song in the video, I'll download the whole thing just so I can hear the rest.  And then I don't always do it, but  I know there are people who listen to music all the time, so this is a great site for getting some new music - and then being able to support the artists as you choose.  You'll also get emails from them once in a while, so you can keep up with the artists you discover, know when they're releasing new music, performing in your area, etc.

Also available on Noisetrade - free ebooks.

Coolest Music Ever

One of my facebook friends linked to this today.  It's a group of Siberian percussionists making music using the ice on frozen Lake Baikal.

Isn't that amazing?  Who knew ice could be such an awesome musical instrument?

And if this isn't real (see related articles), I still applaud the creativity it took to put this video together.

Easily and Accurately Identify the Tracks in Your Music Library

--This post brought to you by Music Tag --

Do you have a huge music collection?  How organized is it?  If you're like most of us, you have multiple tracks listed as Unknown Album or Unknown Artist, and the only way to know what the songs are is to play them.  For instance, I ripped one of my son's CDs last week so I could listen to it on my MP3 player.  It was a CD he had burned, combining both a CD and an EP he had by the same artist - because there was room on the CD, so why waste it.  The problem was, when I ripped it, none of the tracks had any info, except track number of that particular CD.  I had to look up the track listings of the CD and the EP and manually edit all of the info.

Well, there's a better way.  Use Music Tag to automatically download missing track info and cover art for your entire music collection.  Unlike other music databases that I've used before, Music Tag can recognize over 35 Million individual songs - not just complete CDs.  How does it work?  Music Tag uses an advanced digital fingerprinting technology to accurately identify the tracks in your music library and proceeds to download all the missing track info, such as Title, Artist, Album and Cover Art.  I'm not sure exactly what that means, but they say that it is extremely accurate and that it has correctly identified the song in every single test performed.

Music Tag is compatible with Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8 and requires an active internet connection to download missing track data.  You can download a free trial right now, and if you like it, it's only $19.99 and comes with free updates.

With this handy tool, there are no more excuses for unorganized, unnamed music files.

fun. - On the Road Live Performance Tonight

My son introduced me to fun. a few years ago.  If you haven't listened to them, you really should.  They're great!  Actually, you've probably heard them, even if you didn't realize it.  Their music has been turning up on several commercials lately.

Anyway, they're performing in San Francisco tonight.  Not in San Francisco?  That's OK - you can watch the concert online!  Yahoo on the Road will be streaming fun. performing live in San Fransisco tonight at 9pm Pacific.

I know what I'm doing tonight.

Free Music from Google Play

Woman listening to Music
Woman listening to Music (Photo credit: RelaxingMusic)
Did you know that Google Play features a free song every day?  Just visit Google Play Music and look for the Free Song of the Day.  It's a great way to check out new music.  If you've got a Google account, it's really easy to add songs to your Google Play music library with just a couple clicks and then enjoy them wherever you are - from your web browser or mobile device - and share with friends, too.

My only problem is that I forget to check every day, so I'm sure I've missed some good songs.  I do have quite a few songs in my music library, though, so it's not like I don't have anything to listen to.  I have the Google Music Manager set up on my computer so that any time I download a song or album (usually from Amazon) or rip a CD, it automatically gets added to my Google Play library.  The only problem is when I rip an audio book so I can listen to it on my MP3 player - and those tracks get added too.  Then I just have to remember to go online and delete them later, because I don't really need books stored there, and I don't want them counting against the 20,000 songs I can store on Google Play for free.  Even if that is a lot of songs!  (I have a little over 5000 songs right now)

Besides the Free Song of the Day, Google Play usually has several other free songs to choose from.  I just wish there was a way to 'buy' them all at once instead of having to individually click each one.  But they are free...

Best Music of 2012

Amazon has compiled the Best Music of 2012.  I've really enjoyed looking through it.  Some of my favorite music made the list (Some Nights by fun.).   The list also reminded me that I should be listening to some of the MP3 CDs that I bought because they were such a good deal I couldn't resist (My Head Is an Animal), and it's also a good way to discover new music and see what I missed.

The list is divided into Best Albums, Best Songs - both Amazon picked and Customer picked, and Outstanding Albums You Might Have Missed.  Browse the best music of the year by genre, or just browse the lists.

How many of the songs that made the lists are in your collection?  While there are obviously a lot that I don't have, I was surprised by how many of the albums on the list I do have.

What was your favorite song of 2012?  For my answer, see previous post.  (I love that whole album, which did make the list of Best Albums)

I listen to this song over and over.  Love this!  OK, this whole VH1 Storytellers episode is great.  But this.

This!

You're welcome.

Play This

I really enjoy Spotify.  It lets me listen to all kinds of music, see what my friends are listening to, and share what I'm listening to. For instance, I really like this CD:

I just had to try this, because I didn't realize until today that I could add music from Spotify to my blog or a web page.  I knew it was shareable through Facebook, but...  I just had to see how this works.  Do you have to have Spotify installed to play the music?  Let me know, OK?

I am still using the free version of Spotify.  Most of the time I use it to listen to albums I'm thinking of buying from Amazon.  It's so much nicer to be able to listen to the whole songs instead of the little snippets available on the Amazon website.  The ads on Spotify don't bother me much, and if I really want something available for offline use, I buy it from Amazon.  Sometimes I might spend $9.99 on music in a month (the cost of Spotify Premium), but I definitely don't do it every month, and I don't really want to.  I just don't see that I'd use it enough or get enough out of it to justify the paid service.  I know other people listen to music a lot more than I do, and $10/month isn't really that much for unlimited (legal) music.

How about you?  Are you using Spotify?  Free or paid?

Camouflage

We watched the CMT Artists of the Year show tonight, and this was my favorite part.  Joe Walsh and Brad Paisley - Life's Been Good to Me/Camouflage:

So good!  I'm loving that guitar playing!  It has me wondering - has there been or is there going to be a Brad Paisley/Joe Walsh Crossroads?  Time to search CMT.com, I guess!

What is there about Brad Paisley?  Besides his obvious talent, of course!  He can do fun songs like this one.  He can do serious, meaningful songs, and he can play that guitar!

The other artists honored were Jason Aldean, Lady Antebellum, Kenny Chesney, and Taylor Swift.  I'm really not impressed with Taylor, but I do like the other ones.  I just can't decide if I like Kenny or Brad best, but for tonight I'm going to have to go with Brad.

How about you?  Who do you like?

Loved this!
5pm on July 1st, 2011 in Orleans, Cape Cod, MA, shoppers stocking up for the 4th of July got a surprise shot of patriotism to start their weekend! This flash mob was organized by the Spirit of America band to wish everyone a happy 4th of July!

Does it make you wish you could play an instrument, or is that just me?

Born This Way - Entire Album 99¢ Today Only

This isn't my normal kind of music, but my son really likes Lady Gaga.  Her new CD Born This Way dropped today, and Amazon is offering the MP3 download of the album for 99¢!  That's 14 songs for less than $1, the usual cost of one song.  So I bought it.

If you're thinking about getting the new Lady Gaga album, head on over to Amazon and get yours for 99¢ - and be sure to do it today, because this deal won't be available tomorrow.

Buying this album will also upgrade your Cloud storage from the free 5GB Amazon offers all customers to 20GB - if you haven't already done so.

Amazon Cloud Drive and Player

I'm really liking the new Amazon Cloud Player.  I've had a weakness for Amazon MP3s for a while.  Seriously, what a perfect way to buy music - when we buy CDs, we always rip them to MP3 anyway, copy them to carry in the car, and store them in a CD binder.  We don't need or want the plastic case.  When I buy MP3 albums from Amazon, I don't have any of the extras - just MP3s I can burn to CD to have in the car, MP3s I can play on my computer or MP3 player, and they cost much less than buying a CD in the store.

Anyway, with the new Amazon Cloud Drive, when I buy an MP3 song or album from Amazon, I can immediately save it to my Cloud Drive.  (All Amazon customers automatically get 5GB Cloud storage for free, so if you're an Amazon customer, you already have this, just accept the terms to get started.)  I can then listen to it immediately with the Amazon Cloud Player.

But what I'm liking best about this is that all my Amazon MP3 purchases are automatically backed up for me.  Before Cloud Drive, if you downloaded MP3s from Amazon and something happened to those MP3s - hard-drive crash for example - you were just out of luck.  If you wanted to replace them, you'd have to purchase them again.  Admittedly, I never lost any, but it was always a possibility.  I made sure to burn to CD or back up to an external hard-drive every time I downloaded an MP3 album, just so I'd have that back-up.  Now, with Cloud Drive, I can store all my Amazon MP3 purchases and download them anytime and anywhere.  Amazon MP3 purchases don't count against my storage quota, either so I can use my space to upload anything else I want - music, photos, video.  I'll probably end up uploading music so I can use the Cloud Player to play it from any Internet-connected computer.

Through the end of the year, Amazon is offering a free upgrade from 5GB to 20GB with any MP3 album purchase.  That includes even this one - The 99 Most Essential Opera Classics - which only costs 99¢ and I almost bought a couple weeks ago.  I'm glad I waited.  I bought it last night, saved all 99 songs to my Cloud Drive instead of having to download them and got 20GB of Cloud Drive storage for a year.  Can't beat that!

Il Volo on The Talk

I saw and heard these boys perform on The Talk the other day.  Wow!  They are awesome!! With so much undeserved hype given to little twerps like Justin Beiber, it's refreshing to see some teenagers with some real talent.

They said they were giving away a free download of this song on The Talk website, but I didn't check right away, and can't seem to find it now. At least I can still watch the video.  I hope to hear much more from these guys in the future.

Royalty Free Music

I was trying to put together a video today using Windows Live Movie Maker.  I’m not sure exactly what I did, but at some point it told me that I had not added any music and did I want to add some now.  Sure, why not.  So I started looking through my music files to find something appropriate.  How do you even know what music is appropriate for a video?

Well, obviously I don’t know, because the song I picked (because it didn’t have words – that was my reason) wasn’t right – or so my son said.  Then he pointed me to the Royalty Free Music available on incompetech.  I hadn’t heard of it before – of course, I’d never been looking for music for a video before – so I checked it out.  Sure enough, lots of music to choose from, free to use with attribution under a Creative Commons license.

I didn’t end up choosing anything because, while you can browse by genre and feel, I still didn’t know what I was looking for.  Maybe next time…

Sharing Some Music

I'm not a fan of visiting pages or blogs where the music starts automatically, but when I visited one this morning, I was interested in finding out how they added the music.

I may just play with this later and see if I can create and share playlists - without having them start automatically.  Or maybe I'll just create a page just for music I like.

What do you think?  Do you like music on a page?  Do you share your music, and what do you use?
