Coolest Music Ever

One of my facebook friends linked to this today.  It's a group of Siberian percussionists making music using the ice on frozen Lake Baikal.

Isn't that amazing?  Who knew ice could be such an awesome musical instrument?

And if this isn't real (see related articles), I still applaud the creativity it took to put this video together.

How to Eat that Chinese Takeout

Who knew this? I saw this on Anderson Cooper this morning, and I couldn't believe nobody ever knew this.  Or why there aren't instruction printed on the Chinese takeout boxes.  (Yeah, the Chinese restaurant owners have probably been laughing all along.)

Of course, if you're sharing Chinese takeout with a group, you'll still need some plates...

I'm actually thinking that it would work fine if you just opened up the one side - turn the open side toward you and eat from that side, and the unopened back will keep everything nicely inside.

Also, what if you don't eat it all?  They tried it on Anderson Cooper, just folded the box back up again, and it went right back together, so any leftovers will be just fine.

Who else is ready to get some Chinese takeout so you can try this?

Google Glass, How it Feels

Have you seen this?  Google has come up with this incredible little device that will let you take pictures and video of anything you see, just by speaking - "ok glass take a picture" or "ok glass record a video."  Share with friends as you're seeing it.

This new video shows what it does and how it feels:

Doesn't that look like fun?  I've always wanted to get video while riding a roller coaster, but I never figured out a good way to do it.

Wanna try it?  Google is looking for a few bold, creative individuals who want to be a part of shaping the future of Glass.  Using Google+ or twitter, simply tell Google, in 50 words or less, what you'd do if you had Glass, including #ifihadglass in your application.  The deadline for applications is February 27.

For more information, visit google.com/glass/.  I'm sure my life is too boring to qualify, but you might have a chance.

You're welcome.

So Much Link Love

I've been using Zemanta for a while.  It's a great way to find related content when I'm writing posts, and it makes it super easy to share that related content.  Simply click to add images and related articles!

Mostly I add things that I'm interested in, but I never thought about it too much beyond that.  Here's a video from Zemanta showing how linking out (super easily using Zemanta) leads to so much blogger love.

Link Love - Why is linking out good for you (by Zemanta - social blogging) from zemanta on Vimeo.

I guess I'll have to think about all those links a little differently now.  I wonder if it will really make a difference?

Be Fit - Free Workouts on YouTube

I am really enjoying these work-out videos on YouTube.  I've been doing several of the videos from the BeFit in 90 workout system.  I walk 2 miles every day, so I'm just using them as additional exercise and toning - picking different muscle groups to concentrate on each day - not following the whole 90-day system.

I do this one quite often:

and I did this one today:

I think I need to do this one more often, because I was having a hard time jumping by the end there!

If you're looking for a good workout challenge, be sure to check out the 90-day Workout System from BeFit in 90.  It's available exclusively on YouTube for FREE and includes strength, cardio, flexibility, yoga and high intensity drills.  There are playlists for each day, and all you have to do is start with the playlist for Day 1 and continue through the workout playlists for 90 days.  And then?  Then you'll probably be addicted to exercise, and you'll keep doing it!

Besides the BeFit in 90 system, Lionsgate BeFit has many other exercise videos available - again, for FREE on YouTube.  There are some Dirty Dancing workouts and some Dancing with the Stars workouts that really look like fun.  I think I'll try some of those next.

Not a Doctored Photo?

I saw this photo on Facebook tonight.
The caption read: "Taken in Rome, GA last night... I got this off fox fives website go look...to me that doesn't look like a tornado, more like Hell..."
and my friend shared it with the comment, "Not a doctored up photo. Have you ever seen such a sight in your LIFE!!!"

Not one to believe everything I read, I went searching for Fox Five in Georgia, and I did find this photo on their site.  But when I clicked on it, I found a comment that said it was an old photo, not of a tornado from last night's storms, but of a volcano erupting.  The commenter said that he had used the same picture in a video more than a year ago.  I don't know if this is the video he was referring to, but I did find a video that uses this photo, and it was posted in November.

So, maybe it's not a doctored photo - except that it was cropped - but it's also not a photo of a tornado in Georgia last night.

Still a very cool photo! And did you know that volcanic eruptions are accompanied by lightning?  I didn't.  Then again, I've never seen a volcano erupt.  I did, however, watch this video while I was on YouTube:

How cool is that?

As I was writing this post, I went back to the Fox Five news website, and I could no longer find the photo - so it looks like it's been removed.  There are enough photos of the weather and storm damage.  Why someone felt the need to post this particular photo and claim that it's something it's not is beyond me.

Clear Your Google Web History

On March 1st, Google's new unified privacy policy goes into effect, and your web history will be shared across all Google products and sites that you use. Here's a quick video from cnet that shows how to clear your Google web history before that happens:

It may be easier to follow the steps with them listed this way:
  1. Go to the google homepage and sign into your account.
  2. Click the dropdown menu next to your name in the upper-right hand corner of your screen.
  3. Click accounts settings
  4. Find the "Services section"
  5. Under "Services" there is a sub-section that reads "View, enable, disable web history." Click the link next to it that reads: "Go to Web History."
    (Note
: When you click "Go to Web History" you may be taken to a page which gives you the options "Turn Web History On"/"No Thanks": Click "Turn Web History On" and you will finally be taken to step 6 below)
  6. Click on "Remove all Web History"
When you click on "Remove all Web History," a message appears that says " Web History is Paused." What this means is that while Google will continue gathering and storing information about your web history it will make all data anonymous, that is, Google will not associate your Web History information with your online accounts and will therefore be unable to send you customized search results. Google's ability to gather personalized information about you by assigning data to your Gmail and YouTube accounts will remain "Paused" till you click "Resume."

Looks pretty easy, and I know a lot of people will be following these steps!  I'm personally not sure what the advantages or disadvantages are of having Google use my history to send me customized search results.  What do you think?

See It, Save It, with Clipix

I spend a lot of time online, and I'm always finding interesting stuff.  The main reason I started this blog is to keep track of and share all the cool stuff I find.  Unfortunately, that hasn't happened quite the way I imagined.  Oh, I still find plenty of interesting things, but I don't always get around to actually sharing those things, and lots of times I find interesting things one day, but I forget to save them or mention them - and then I either forget or can't find them again.  Anybody else have that problem?

Well, I just found this new site called clipix, and I think it's going to be a big help.  Basically, clipix makes it really simple to save anything you see so you can find it and go back to it later.  Start by signing up for a free account - I used my facebook account, so it was just a matter of connecting and authorizing the app.  Then add the Clip button to your Bookmarks bar, and you're good to go.  Start clipping all the fabulous content you find every day.  They start you off with some basic boards - Books I'd Like to Read, Vacation Ideas, Gifts for the Family, Interesting Articles - just to get you started.  You can rename those if you want and create your own as you find things to save.  You can have as many clipboards as you like and organize them any way you like.I know I'm going to be using that Interesting Articles board a lot!  I'm always finding things I want to read but just don't have time to read right then.  I've added a few already, but I'm sure there will be many more added:

Interesting Articles
I like that clipix lets you choose from the images on whatever page you're saving, so it's a bit easier to remember why you clipped it in the first place, but if there are no images, simply type your own words in and give the clip a relevant title.  The web page and title are added automatically to the description, so you don't even have to type that in.  Of course, you can change it or add to it as you want.

Clipix also makes it really easy to share all the fun stuff you're finding - send an email, share on facebook or twitter.  Or, if you want to keep something to yourself, you can keep all your clipboards (or just some of them) completely private.  Working on a project with someone else?  You can set up what they call a Syncboard and everybody can add to it together and see everyone else's updates in real time.

I can see how this can be really handy and really addictive.  I wonder who's going to clip and organize the whole Internet first!  OK, maybe not, but at least we can all clip and keep track of the stuff we're interested in.  Visit clipix, sign up for your free account and start clipping!  And let me know how you're going to use clipix.  I think the possibilities are endless.

Just in case I've forgotten something important, check out this video explaining it all:

Emote Your Vote

This is kinda fun.  Visit affectiva and click on the Watch Demo link.  It will take you to a page where you can turn on your webcam, watch Super Bowl ads, and they'll read your expressions to see how you respond to the ads.  You can share your results and ask your friends to do it too so you can compare, or you can keep them private.

How does it work?
Affdex tracks facial and head gestures in real-time using key points on the viewer's face to recognize a rich array of emotional and cognitive states, such as enjoyment, attention and confusion. Individual emotional responses are then aggregated, analyzed and presented in an interactive dashboard that provides moment-by-moment analysis of the emotional track with dynamic segmentation by emotion metric and survey responses.
Yeah, I don't understand it either!  Basically, they just watch your facial expressions and reactions and analyze them.  I think in the end they'll tally up all the results and share them with the advertisers.  It might just mean better commercials because, let's face it, some of them are really really dumb.  Of course the Super Bowl ads are usually pretty good.  I know I don't watch the Super Bowl for the football!

Anyway, check it out - Emote your Vote.

Camouflage

We watched the CMT Artists of the Year show tonight, and this was my favorite part.  Joe Walsh and Brad Paisley - Life's Been Good to Me/Camouflage:

So good!  I'm loving that guitar playing!  It has me wondering - has there been or is there going to be a Brad Paisley/Joe Walsh Crossroads?  Time to search CMT.com, I guess!

What is there about Brad Paisley?  Besides his obvious talent, of course!  He can do fun songs like this one.  He can do serious, meaningful songs, and he can play that guitar!

The other artists honored were Jason Aldean, Lady Antebellum, Kenny Chesney, and Taylor Swift.  I'm really not impressed with Taylor, but I do like the other ones.  I just can't decide if I like Kenny or Brad best, but for tonight I'm going to have to go with Brad.

How about you?  Who do you like?

Absolutely amazing.  Be sure to watch this one.  Really - don't miss it.

Loved this!
5pm on July 1st, 2011 in Orleans, Cape Cod, MA, shoppers stocking up for the 4th of July got a surprise shot of patriotism to start their weekend! This flash mob was organized by the Spirit of America band to wish everyone a happy 4th of July!

Does it make you wish you could play an instrument, or is that just me?

CloudMagic - Intergrated Search for Google Services

A friend of mine shared this on facebook today, and I definitely want to try it out.  I installed the Firefox add-on, but since I have to restart Firefox to be able to use it, I have yet to check it out.  From watching the video, I think it definitely looks like it can make things easier.

CloudMagic is a browser add-on for Firefox and Chrome that provides fast, integrated search for these Google & Google apps account services:
  • Emails
  • Contacts
  • Documents
  • Spreadsheets
  • Presentations
  • Forms
Basically, it looks like you can easily search for and find anything in your email, docs, or contacts and use information from any and all of your services while working on an email or document, or whatever you are doing.  I'm all for anything that can make my life easier and more organized and that can save time!

Twitter and Facebook support is coming soon, too.

Aurora over Norway (Time Lapse)

This is absolutely, totally, completely amazing!

The Aurora from Terje Sorgjerd on Vimeo.

More info at Astronomy Picture of the Day:
Explanation: Sometimes, after your eyes adapt to the dark, a spectacular sky appears. Such was the case earlier this month when one of the largest auroral displays in recent years appeared over northern locations like the border between Norway and Russia. Pictured in the above time-lapse movie, auroras flow over snow covered landscapes, trees, clouds, mountains and lakes found near Kirkenes, Norway. Many times the auroras are green, as high energy particles strike the Earth's atmosphere, causing the air to glow as electrons recombine with their oxygen hosts. Other colors are occasionally noticeable as atmospheric nitrogen also becomes affected. In later sequences the Moon and rising stars are also visible. With the Sun expected to become ever more active over the next few years, there may be many opportunities to see similarly spectacular auroras personally, even from areas much closer to the equator
Someday, I really want to see these in person!

Get Up and Check Your Email

I'm watching this video explaining the new Gmail Motion, and I just can't stop laughing. Can you even imagine?

I know some of you are thinking this looks like fun and you want to try it.  Be sure to get your printable motion guide so you can get started!  I'm thinking something like this wouldn't work for me.  I'd never be able to check or send email without worrying that everyone was watching and laughing at me.

What do you think. Would you try Gmail Motion? Will Google do for email what the Wii did for video games?
