Pin Now, Read Later?

Pinterest.  It can be so addictive.  Once you start looking at all the great stuff pinned by others, it's just so easy to repin, repin, repin.

I see a lot of pins with the words 'pin now, read later' - good idea, right?  Just pin the stuff that looks interesting; you can always get back to it and really check it out later.  All you have to do is mouse over any interesting photo or pin that catches your eye, click the 'repin' button, and select a board to pin it too, and you're on to the next one.

I admit, I've done that a time or two.  The problem with that, though, is that so many other people are doing the same thing.  It's OK if the original pinner pinned the actual source of the article or recipe or tutorial or what have you.  But it doesn't always work that way.

Too often I find pins that just don't lead anywhere.  I click something that looks interesting, and I get a warning about a suspicious site - and I'm not going there, even if Pinterest actually gave me the option.  And that means I do not find the recipe or tutorial I was looking for.  (If it looks really good, I'll do a web search for whatever the pin was supposed to take me to, and I'll pin that.)

Sometimes pins lead to the original site, but not to the exact post or recipe - meaning I have to search through the whole list or blog to find the information I came for.  For instance, I was just searching for flank steak recipes and found one for tacos that look really good.  Clicking the pin led me to a page with all the posts on that blog that were labelled 'Mexican' - so I had to scroll through the whole list of posts to find the one I wanted. And then I pinned it.  Instead of repinning.  MY pin leads directly to the specific post with the taco recipe.  I'll be able to find the recipe later when I want it.

Everyone who just repinned the recipe without actually clicking through and looking at it?  When later finally comes, and they're ready to try the recipe (or read the cleaning tips, or follow the tutorial), they'll click, expecting to find whatever it was they pinned.  Instead, in this case, they'll get the whole list of 'Mexican' labelled posts.  If it's much later at all, that list could be significantly longer, making it even harder to find the recipe.

Another thing I've found, especially with recipes (but that may be just because I pin more recipes than anything else), are pins that lead to a post that links to the actual source of the recipe.  In that case, I visit the original source and pin that one.  One, because I don't want to have to click and then click again to get where I want to go, and Two, credit, linkage, and traffic should go to the original source and not just someone who linked to the original source.

So, while it's tempting to 'pin now, read later' I make a habit of checking the pins before I repin them.  That way, when later finally comes, I'll be able to read.

So Much Link Love

I've been using Zemanta for a while.  It's a great way to find related content when I'm writing posts, and it makes it super easy to share that related content.  Simply click to add images and related articles!

Mostly I add things that I'm interested in, but I never thought about it too much beyond that.  Here's a video from Zemanta showing how linking out (super easily using Zemanta) leads to so much blogger love.

Link Love - Why is linking out good for you (by Zemanta - social blogging) from zemanta on Vimeo.

I guess I'll have to think about all those links a little differently now.  I wonder if it will really make a difference?

Pinterest - So Addictive!

I signed up for Pinterest a while back, but I hadn't really spent too much time there -until last night.  Oh my!  This site is so addictive!!

What is Pinterest?  It's a site that makes it easy for you to collect, save, and share all your interests from across the web.  You organize all your beautiful finds from across the internet on 'pinboards' - kinda like virtual bulletin boards that you pin photos and recipes and ideas to.  You can have as many pinboards as you want and pin as many things to them as you want.  People use Pinterest to plan their weddings, decorate their homes, organize their favorite recipes, collect craft ideas, and so much more.  You can save gift lists, wish lists, inspirational words, fashion ideas, menu ideas, whatever you want.

The addictive part is when you start looking at other people's pins.  Browse pins and pinboards created by other people, discover new things, get inspiration, re-pin the ones you like, and it goes on and on and on.  It's really hard to stop!  You can follow your friends to see what they pin as well as finding new friends who share your interests.

I'm loving it.  I'm collecting recipes I want to try, handy household tips, craft ideas that I might actually try one of these days or at least have one of my friends make for me, household decoration ideas, and all kinds of other things. Check out my boards.  It's one of the easiest ways ever to save everything that catches my eye and all the stuff I want to try or look at more closely later.  I added the button to my toolbar so I can quickly pin from anywhere.  What's great about it is that it's very visual - you end up with a whole board/page of pictures - NOT just a list of words and links - and it's easy to see what caught your eye in the first place.

Pinterest is free to join, but you will have to request an invite first.  Trust me, you want to!

I Don't Want my Links to be NOFOLLOW!

LiveJournal was taken down by DDOS in 2006.Image via WikipediaI'm feeling very frustrated by the idiots people at LiveJournal right now.  Apparently they've been having problems.  So one of the 'fixes' is:
Spam: In an effort to reduce spam on LiveJournal, the text string 'rel=nofollow' will be added to URLs for entries and comments posted from Plus and Basic accounts. This will help reduce visibility in search engines and make spam commenting less attractive to spammers.
I missed this when they announced it, but I wrote a paid blogsvertise post last week, and it got rejected because my links were nofollow.  Well, I knew I didn't post nofollow links, but I checked the code anyway, and the links looked fine.  So, I re-submitted - and had it rejected again.  They said to check my blog settings, which I did, along with the code again, and I couldn't find anything that would have made my links nofollow.  But then I checked this NoFollow Link Checker, and sure enough, those links came up as nofollow.  What in the world?

That's when I went searching and found the above announcement.  And now I'm just frustrated with the whole thing. I'm thinking it may be time to abandon LiveJournal for once and for all...

Where Are My Links?

I've been sharing links on Facebook, mainly because it's easy.  I see something I like, and I share the link.  And I used to be able to go back and find those links - because I wasn't just sharing them, I was saving them for later.  Except, I can't find them anymore!  I checked Facebook's help page and found this:
Where are my links?

You can access your links from your homepage:
  1. Go to the left-hand navigation column, and look for the section that lists your applications.
  2. Click on "More" to see the full list.
  3. Find and select the "Links" filter.
  4. At the top of the page, select "My Links."
The only problem is that I don't see any "Links" filter and can't select "My Links" after that.  They must be there somewhere, but for now it looks like all my links are missing.  So, facebook help was not much help.  If any of you know how I can find the links I've posted to facebook, please let me know!

But from now on, when I come across a recipe I want to try, a game I want to play, or a great source for postcards, I'm going to have to save it to my recipe blog or share it here, instead of relying on facebook - which is what I should have been doing all along.  Then, I'll be able to find them later.

All My Faves

I just learned about this website today in an email. It's called All My Faves, and I think it links to everything on the Internet. Email? They've got it. Travel sites? Those too. Video, music, dating, chat, and games. If it's not here, I don't think it's on the web.

The blog gives more information about a lot of the sites. It looks like a good place to find all kinds of fun and useful sites.

Technorati for my Blog

I just pointed one of my other blogs to a Custom Domain today. Now, I have to start all over again, building Page Rank, lowering my Alexa score, increasing my authority in Technorati. If I had known I could use my own domain back in the beginning of the year when I really started using that blog, I would have done it then. Of course, that means I would have had to come up with a good domain name back then, and who knows what I would have come up with.

I ended up using www.alwaysbcmom.com, and while I was updating my Technorati Profile and claiming that blog - even though it's the same blog as before - I realized that I hadn't added this one. So now I'm doing it. I really like Technorati. It's a great way of keeping track of who links to you, if you care about things like that. I do. I think it's fun to see who is linking to me and then being able to visit them.
